Her parents were William and Mary Buchanan. She married Gray O’Brien in 1991, their marriage lasted only eight years. She later wed talent agent Sam Gores in 2003 and they also divorced in 2013. She has two children.

She studied at Boston University from 1980 and 1984, graduating with a degree in music theory.
Career
Buchanan took up the role of Melissa Bedford in the television series “General Hospital” from 2001 – 2001. She appeared as Elise Moxley on the American television soap opera “The Young and the Restless” from 2015 – 2016. She also starred as Vicky in the American soap opera “As the World Turns” from 1997 until 2001.

She received two Daytime Emmy Awards nominations for “Lead Actress” in 1996 and 1998.
