About Jeremiah S. Black
Jeremiah Sullivan Black was one of America’s leading lawyers during the 1850s. He served as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania between 1851 and 1857. After leaving this post, President James Buchanan named him as the Attorney General of the United States. As a member of the Democratic Party, Black was appointed as the U.S. Secretary of State in 1860, replacing Lewis Cass who resigned that same year.
Black was known for his stance against the Reconstruction plan of Congress. He also served as the legal advisor of William W. Belknap, former United States Secretary of War. The Pennsylvania-born attorney also wrote President Andrew Johnson’s speech vetoing the passage of the Reconstruction Act in 1867.
Family
He was the son of Henry Black who served in the U.S. House of Representatives. His mother was called Mary Sullivan. He had four kids with Mary Forward named Mary Sullivan Black, Henry Black Jr., Rebekah Black and Chauncey Black. The latter became Pennsylvania's Lieutenant Governor in 1883.
