About Jerome Lawrence
Jerome Lawrence was a renowned playwright who formed a great partnership with lyricist Robert Edwin Lee. During the Second World War, the two worked with the Armed Forces Radio. During that period, the duo wrote many plays including the famous “Favorite Story”.
Gaining lots of attention, the team came up with perhaps their most popular work which was entitled “Inherit the Wind”. Lee and Lawrence collaborated on over 30 projects which included “Shangri-La” and “Mame”.
Family
His original name was Jerome Lawrence Schwartz and he was raised by his parents Sarah Rogen and Samuel Schwartz. He had a relationship with Will Willoughby. He was the uncle of Paula Robison, a popular flutist.
Education
In 1933, Lawrence completed his education at Glenville High School. He then moved to Ohio State University.
Recognitions
He was nominated for Tony Award’s “Best Book of a Musical” prize for his work on “Mame”.
Trivia
As a teacher, he taught at the University of Southern California.
At the beginning of his career, he worked as a newspaper reporter.
