Jerome Robbins’ career as a choreographer, producer and director saw him being active from the late 1930s until 1998. His best-known stage productions include “High Button Shoes”, “On the Town”, “West Side Story” and “The King and I”.
Family Life
He was raised in Manhattan, New York City, as the son of Harry and Lena Rabinowitz. His birth name, Jerome Wilson Rabinowitz, was changed to Jerome Robbins because of showbiz.
Achievements
For his work on the film adaptation of “The West Side Story”, he won a “Best Director” award at the Oscars. He also received the National Medal of Arts and five Tony Awards. He has been an inductee of the American Theater Hall of Fame since 1979.
Death
He died on 29 July 1998 from a stroke. He was 79.
