Raised in Long Island, Jerry met his would-be business partner Ben Cohen in High School during the early 1960s.

Jerry and Ben set up their first ice cream scoop shop in a renovated gas station in Vermont in 1978. The company made headlines when it built the world's largest ice cream sundae in St. Albans in 1983. By 2000, the business had evolved to become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Unilever. In 2014, a non-dairy option was introduced to suit the demand of their clients. The duo’s foundation has donated a percentage of the company's annual profit to community-based projects.
