About Jerry Ross
"The Pajama Game" and "Damn Yankees," are generally considered some of the most renowned Broadway shows. Those shows were written by Jerry Ross, an award-winning composer and writer who died tragically young at the age of 29.
Early Life
He was born Jerold Rosenberg in the Bronx, New York, to Russian immigrants. Throughout his formative years, he was active in theater. After high school, he attended New York University to study under Rudolph Schramm.
Career
He met Eddie Fisher, who helped him record his song "The Newspaper Song." He got acquainted with Richard Adler in 1950 after writing several popular tunes. They became a duo and began writing songs and original materials, primarily for TV and nightclub acts.
In 1953, Tony Bennett's version of their song, "Rags to Riches," debuted at the top of the charts. In 1954, their second production, "The Pajama Game," debuted on Broadway and won the 1955 Tony Award for Best Musical.
The musical "Damn Yankees" was released in May 1955 and went on to win a Tony, the Donaldson Award, and the Variety Drama Critics Award.
Although he was unable to watch them be transformed into pictures, both musicals were successful.
On November 11th, 1955, bronchiectasis-related complications claimed his life.
