Background
Jerry was born to a Jewish family in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. His parents were both Jewish immigrants who relocated to New York in 1900, after fleeing anti-Semitism in their native country Lithuania.
Career Highlights
Jerry is the author of the popular comic feature film Superman, which he created with his friend Joe Shuster.
Jerry wrote a column for his school's weekly newspaper, The Glenville Torch. One of his works for that newspaper was a parody of “Tarzan”.
The Superman Sensation
The two comic acts started “Superman” in 1930 with the lead role as an antagonist, but after several consultations made him a superhero.
In 1936, the two tried to make “Superman” a daily graphic novel but failed after several attempts. Following this, the two partners secured a job with DC Comics. Then in 1939, DC Comics started publishing “Superman” as a storyline in their Action Comics. Superman made an appearance in the first issue of this comic.
With time the Superman comic gained ground and DC Comics was forced to create a separate comic for Superman.
In 1939, the two creators signed over their rights to Superman to DC Comics. Superman is now known all over the world.
Death
Jerry died on January 28, 1996. He suffered a heart attack prior to his death.
