About Jesse Jones
Jesse Jones started showing glimpses of his leadership skills at the age of 14 years when he was made the manager of a Tennessee-based tobacco factory. At an early age, he was given the mandate to run an estate which was left behind by his uncle. Later, he established his company which was known as the South Texas Lumber Company. He was also into buildings and was known as the first owner of the Foster Building.
Despite recording some successes as a businessman, Jones was widely known for his works in the political scenes. His career began when he was appointed as the Chairman of the Houston Harbor Board.
From 1917 to 1919, he worked with the American Red Cross, and in 1932 joined the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. In 1940, during the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt, he was appointed as the U.S. Secretary of Commerce.
He was one of the children of Laura and William Jones, and was raised alongside four siblings. In 1920, he married a woman named Mary Gibbs.
In 1912, he served as the president of the National Bank of Commerce in Houston.
Roosevelt referred to him as "Jesus Jones".
