Early Career and Interest in Australian Rules Football
This Irish-born sportsman got interested in Australian rules football at the age of 14 after watching “The Club”, a 1980 film directed by Bruce Beresford. An 18-year-old Stynes moved to Australia when he was recruited for the “Irish Experiment” to undergo a crash course on Australian rules football. He started playing in the under-19 team in 1985. In just two years he moved to the Melbourne Demons as a senior.
Career
Stynes played a record 244 consecutive games from 1987 to 1998. He perfected his innate skills and ability in the game to dominate the 1991 season with the league’s best 214 mark. Commentators praised his form and endurance, naming him the only non-Australian-born player to receive the game's most prestigious honor. This outstanding player won the club champion awards for three consecutive seasons.
Awards
He was inducted into a number of organizations, including the Melbourne Hall of Fame and the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
In 1991, he won the Leigh Matthews Trophy. That same year, he won the Brownlow Medal.
He was twice part of the All-Australian team – in 1993 and 1991.
He won the Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Medal four times – in 1997, 1996, 1995 and 1991.
Retirement
He retired at the end of the 1998 season after breaking his hand. He played a total of 264 AFL games, ranking No. 2 on the club’s games tally at the time. He became an AFL administrator in 1999. In 2008, Stynes won the hearts of fans once again when he helped his old club Melbourne Demons raise funds to pay up a debt of $5 million.
Death
He was diagnosed with cancer and it had spread to his brain in 2009. On March 20, 2012, this remarkable figure lost the battle at the age of 45.
Trivia
Stynes’ life and battle with cancer was filmed for a television documentary “Every Heart Beats True: The Jim Stynes Story”.
For his contribution to the sport and other charitable initiatives, he was honored with an OAM (Order of Australia).
