Throughout his 50-year career, Irish songwriter Jimmy Kennedy penned over 2000 songs, with over 200 of those songs becoming global hits and classics.
Childhood
Kennedy started writing songs as a young boy growing up in Omagh, Northern Ireland. He often drew inspiration from the sights and sounds of his hometown. He graduated from Trinity College in Dublin and moved to England to teach. In 1927, he became a civil servant.
Career
While waiting to be posted to Nigeria, Kennedy took up songwriting again and in 1930, he wrote the song “The Barmaid’s Song”, which was performed by English musician Gracie Fields. He also wrote other hits like “My Song Goes Round the World” and “The Teddy Bear’s Picnic.” While serving in World War II, he wrote the hit wartime song “We’re Going to Hang Out the Washing on the Siegfried Line.”
Awards
He won two Ivor Novello Awards and was knighted in 1983. Kennedy also received an honorary degree from the New University of Ulster and was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1997.Jimmy Kennedy Rank
