Early life & Education
Born to a pair of immigrants in New York's Greenwich Village, he headed off to read Law at the New York Law School in 1904.
Political Career
In 1914, he won an election into the State Senate. A little over a decade later, he served for 2 terms as NYC mayor. During his 2nd term, the New York legislature launched an inquiry into some corruption claims levelled against him. The investigation showed several instances of corruption which attracted 15 charges against him. He also failed to give plausible reasons for the sums of money in his bank account. He resigned in September, 1932.

He had 2 failed marriages first to actress Betty Compton and then to Janet Walker. His second wife was an actress and singerHe had 2 adopted kids.
