About Joachim von Ribbentrop
Joachim von Ribbentrop was a successful businessman before entering into politics. A close associate to Adolf Hitler, Ribbentrop was made the Foreign Affairs Minister of Nazi Germany in 1938 and served until 1945. Prior to that, he served as his country’s representative to the Court of St James' in the United Kingdom.
As the Minister for Foreign Affairs, he was key in negotiating the Pact of Steel between Germany and Italy. He was also instrumental in brokering the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact. Ribbentrop agreed on the war against the U.S. in 1941 after the infamous Pearl Harbor attack.
Family
He was the son of Johanne Sophie Hertwig and her army officer husband Richard Ulrich Friedrich Joachim Ribbentrop. He was married to Anna Elisabeth Henkell and was succeeded by five children.
Death
The former government official was arrested in 1945 and charged with war crimes. During the Nuremberg trials, he was given a death sentence and was executed the following year.
