Joan was an Australian who dazzled her fans and people from far and near with her voice as a dramatic coloratura soprano.
Personal Life
Her parents named her Dame Joan Alston Sutherland when she was born and enrolled her into St Catherine’s School. Her mother loved to sing too so she learnt a lot by listening to her mom sing and trying to sing like her. Her mother had trained as a mezzo-soprano even though she did not work with it professionally. She started training professionally when she became a teenager.
Career
She was featured in “Dido and Aeneas” where she played the role of Dido. She received an invite to sing at the Royal Opera house and the song she was to sing was “Lucia di Lammermoor”. She later worked on “The Art of the Prima Donna” and released the album.
Achievements
She participated in the Sydney Eisteddfod McDonald’s Operatic Opera which was called the Sun Aria at the time and emerged winner. Her album “The Art of the Prima Donna” earned her a Grammy award. It was for the category of Best Classical Performance- Vocal Soloist. She received the award in 1962.
Death
In 2010, while at home, she suffered from a cardiopulmonary failure and passed on.
