About Joanna of Castile
Though history has dubbed Queen Joanna “mad,” many critics have argued against the judgement. They believed that the seeming madness was a mere expression of the queen’s obsessive jealousy over her husband’s serial infidelity.
Family & Early Life
Joanna was the daughter of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile. She was also Catherine of Aragon’s elder sister and sister-in-law to Henry VIII of England.
Education
The whip-smart heiress, during childhood, received one of the most elite humanist educations of her age. She had lessons in a host of subjects, including music, languages and philosophy.
Marriage to Philip & Mental Instability
At age 16, she married Philip of Burgundy, the son of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. Although she had shown signs of mental illness when her mother died, her husband’s philandering pushed her into periods of jealous rage that were widely considered her most infamous displays of mental imbalance. Her mental condition worsened after Philip's death and his son, Charles, ruled Spain in her stead.
Legacy
The queen's life inspired C.W. Gortner's novel, “The Last Queen.”
