About João Havelange
Brazilian lawyer Jean-Marie Faustin Godefroid was the jack of all trades. He doubled as a businessman and an athlete and served as the seventh president of FIFA from 1974 to 1998.
Early Life
The lawyer was born to Faustin Havelange and Juliette Ludivine Calmeau. He enrolled in the Fluminense Federal University and graduated with a law degree. Havelange was a lover of sports. He chased his early goals as a swimmer by competing in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin.
Career
Havelange later became a Brazilian Olympic Committee and Union Cycliste Internationale member in 1958. He then rose to become the president of the Brazilian Sports Confederation from 1958 to 1973. Havelange was the president of FIFA, the world governing body of football, from 1974 to 1998.
Personal Life and Death
Havelange tied the knot with Anna Maria Havelange in 1946. He died in 2016 from a lung infection and was survived by a daughter.
