About Joe Paterno
Joseph Vincent Paterno, simply known as Joe Paterno or JoePa, was an American college football coach, athletic director and player. He is regarded as one of the most victorious coaches in the history of NCAA FBS with 409 victories.
Family Life
He was born to a law clerk named Angelo Lafayette Paterno, and a homemaker known as Florence de LaSalle Cafiero.
He married Suzanne Pohland in 1962 and had 5 children namely, David, Scott, Diana, Mary Kay and Joseph Jr. He had 17 grandchildren before his death.
Achievements
He was included in the College Football Hall of Fame in 2007.
He coached at least 5 teams that were victorious in major bowl games and led the Nittany Lions to win 24 bowl games.
He holds a record for 14 inceptions while playing the cornerback and quarterback for the Bears.
Under his leadership, Penn State won two national championships in 1982 and 1986 and five untied, undefeated seasons.
He won the AFCA Coach of the Year award five times and received the Dave McClain Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year thrice.
Trivia
He was dismissed in 2011, following the Penn State child abuse scandal and died a few months later after suffering from lung cancer.
He fought in the Army during World War II for a year before entering Brown University.
He belonged to the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity.
