About Joe Shuster
Joseph Shuster was a Canadian-American comic book artist best known for co-creating Superman in Action Comics #1 with Jerry Siegel.
His comic book career after Superman was unsuccessful, and by the mid-70s, he had retired from the industry due to partial blindness.
Family and Background
Shuster was born to a Jewish immigrant family in Toronto, Canada. His parents were Julius Shuster and Ida Katharske. Shuster went to Ryerson and Lansdowne Public Schools.
Superman and Other Notable Works
His family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, when he was nine years old. It was in Cleveland he met and befriended his future comic book partner, Jerome "Jerry" Siegel. They created a comic strip with Shuster drawing and Siegel writing about a super-powered villain who later transformed into a hero. When that didn't pan out, both men got jobs at DC-National (now DC Comics) working on different titles before being offered a chance to create Superman.
Lawsuit against DC
They filed a lawsuit against DC for a share of the Superman rights in 1946. The case dragged on until 1948, when the two men agreed to only receive royalties, signing away future claims to the Superman character.
