About Joey Dunlop
To many motor racing fans, Northern Irish motorcyclist Joey Dunlop was one of the legendary motor racers of his time.
Background and Family
He was Irish and hailed from Ballymoney in Northern Ireland. His parents were William and May and he had six siblings.
His racing career began in 1969, with his first race coming at Maghaberry on a Triumph Tiger Club. After some time, he became an exciting and talented motor racer
His first full sponsor was Danny McCook who got him a 350cc Amerachi. His first entry into the North West 200 was in 1973. He started racing for the Rea Racing Team in 1975 and began to win local races.
Dunlop also won his first road race in 1975. His first race in England was in 1976 at Oulton Park. During that same year, he participated in the Isle of Man TT.
The king of the road was also a philanthropist. His charity works included helping the disadvantaged children and helpless orphans in a number of Balkan countries in Europe. The motorcyclist drove a van loaded with supplies to orphanages in countries such as Romania and Bosnia-Herzegovina. He always did this before the beginning of the annual racing season.
He won his first Isle of Man TT race in 1977. He started winning at the North West 200 in 1979.
Joe Dunlop then won the TT Formula One World Motorcycle Championships in 1982.
In 1986, he was honored with an MBE (Member of the British Empire) for his service to motorsport. He later received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for his philanthropic deeds.
In 2000, the Northern Irish motorcyclist was awarded with a Manx Sword of State.
He died during a race in Estonia in 2000. The accident was due to the slippery roads that were caused by wet weather on the day. Joey Dunlop left behind his wife, Linda Patterson.
