Background
He was born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. However, his family relocated to Geneva, Switzerland, when he was a year and a half old.
Youth Career
Beginning his career as a defensive midfielder, he joined Etoile Carouge at age 12 in 1998 and stayed at the club until 2003.
Professional Career
He is mainly remembered for his spells at the English giant side, Arsenal. Joining the team as a defensive midfielder, his position was changed to a central defender, and he occasionally played as a full-back. He earned about 140 caps for Arsenal during his stay, which spanned from 2004 until 2013.
Between 2007 and 2014, he had loan spells at Birmingham City and German sides Hannover 96 and Hamburger SV. He then signed a 3-year contract with Hamburger SV, which lasted from 2014 to 2017.
From 2017 to 2021, he played for various clubs across Europe, including Antalyaspor, SPAL, Sion, Neuchâtel Xamax, and Nordsjælland.
He had over 70 caps for Switzerland and was part of the 2006 and 2014 FIFA World Cup teams and 2008 UEFA EURO.
He announced his professional retirement on 4 June 2021.
