About Johann Gottlieb Fichte
Johann Gottlieb Fichte was a great German philosopher famously remembered as a founding figure of the “German Idealism” movement.
Background & Education
He was a native of Rammenau, Upper Lusatia. From 1774 until 1780, he received education at the “Pforta School” near Naumburg, Germany. He enrolled at the theology seminary of the University of Jena in 1780 and transferred to the University of Leipzig in 1781, where he studied until 1784.
Ideologies & Major Philosophical Works
His most unique and distinctive work was “Science of Knowledge (1794)”, a response to Immanuel Kant’s critical philosophy, particularly his “1788 Critique of Practical Reason”. To show that practical reason is the basis of all mankind’s reason and knowledge, he began his theories from the supreme principle, “Ego”. He described the ego as autonomous and sovereign and from which all other information may be deduced.
In 1807 and 1808, he sought to rouse German nationalists against the great Napoleon in his renowned patriotic lectures “Reden an die Deutsche Nation”. Fichte is considered one of the world’s greatest transcendental idealists, having over 50 bibliographies to his credit.
Death
He suffered a virulent fever and died at age 51 on January 29, 1814.
