About Johann Joachim Winckelmann
Considered to be the father of Hellenic archaeology, Johann Joachim Winckelmann was a German historian and archaeologist best known for publishing writings that have not only Western art themes, but philosophy and literature as well. His first book “History of Ancient Art” was one of the first German books to become a European literature classic.
Background
Winckelmann was born in Stendal in ancient Germany. His family was poor, and although he struggled in his formative years, his ambition to pursue his academic interests inspired him to yearn for more.
He attended the University of Halle to study theology, but he grew dissatisfied with his subject and took an interest in Greek classics. He held many other career interests, including studying to become a physician and teaching languages. When he still wasn’t fulfilled, Winckelmann realized that his interest in the male form made him appreciate both Greek and Roman sculptures.
His Works
He was one of the first people to view art as a representation of a particular area and period. His remarks on ancient art were published in his works, including “Essay on the Beautiful in Art” and “Letters to Bianconi.”
Personal Life
Winckelmann was a known homosexual and most of his writings had themes of homoeroticism. He was murdered in 1768 by another guest in a hotel.
