About Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner
Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner was a leading German chemist best known for identifying and investigating the similarities among chemical elements, laying the foundation for developing the periodic law and systems for chemical elements. He was also a long-term pharmacy and chemistry professor at the University of Jena.
Background & Education
He was of German descent and was born in Hof, Principality of Bayreuth. Growing up as the son of a coachman provided no means for formal education. However, he read widely, attended free lectures on sophisticated science topics, and later served as an apprentice to a pharmacist. He eventually gained admission to the University of Jena, becoming an assistant professor in 1810.
Scientific Contributions
In his famous work in 1829, he documented similar patterns in specific properties of some groups of chemical elements. He then named these sets of chemical elements “Dobereiner’s triads” and developed his famous theory “Dobereiner’s law of triads.”
He was renowned for his work on the ability of platinum to be used as a catalyst. In addition, he invented the earliest lighter (Döbereiner’s lamp) and discovered furfural.
Death
The chemist died of natural causes at age 68 in 1849.
