About John Basilone
Following his three years of service in the United States Army, John Basilone enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in June 1940. He is remembered best for his acts of heroism during the Guadalcanal Campaign’s Battle for Henderson Field in 1942 and the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. He had previously been on active duty with the Army in the Philippines.
Family Life
He was raised in Raritan, New Jersey as the sixth of Salvatore Basilone and Theadora Bencivenga’s ten children. In July 1944, he married Lena Mae Riggi, a Marine Corps Women’s Reserve Sergeant.
Achievements
He was the recipient of a Medal of Honor, Navy Cross and Purple Medal amongst other military honors.
Death
He was killed on 19 February 1945 following his single-handed destruction of the enemy blockhouse during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
