John Calvin was a French theologian. He was originally trained as a humanist lawyer. He was a polemic writer who generated much controversy.
He was a principal figure in the development of Calvinism and he was influenced by the Augustinian tradition.
He is recognized as a Renewer of the Church in Lutheran churches and as a saint in the Church of England, commemorated on 26 May and on 28 May by the Episcopal Church.
