"I Knew It Was You" is a documentary about him, which was screened at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009. It contains interviews with Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Gene Hackman, Richard Dreyfuss and Francis Ford Coppola, among others.

He was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1975.

He was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and he died in 1978. He was then dating Meryl Streep.

Al Pacino has stated: "All I wanted to do was work with John for the rest of my life. He was my acting partner".
