About John Chancellor
John Chancellor was an award-winning journalist who spent most of his career at NBC News. From reporting news as a foreign affairs correspondent to becoming the Voice of American director, Chancellor was a seasoned broadcaster.
Early Life
As a child, he had an inquisitive mind but Chancellor dropped out of school to enlist in the United State Army where he served in the Public Relations unit during the Second World War. He was hired after his service as a reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times in 1947 and went on to be a correspondent on NBC's evening newscast “The Huntley-Brinkley Report”.
Career
Chancellor served under President Johnson as Director of Voice of America, a position he held until 1967. He stepped in to anchor NBC Nightly, setting the pace for Nightcap news. During elections, he would represent the parties in different colors, red for Republicans and blue for Democrats. This method was adopted by all mainstream new outlets by 2000. In 1992, this veteran journalist was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.
Death
Chancellor died at the age of 69 years from stomach cancer.
