John Dramani Mahama’s political career
He served as the Member of Parliament for Bole from 1997 to 2009, when he became the Vice President of Ghana following the win of his party (the National Democratic Congress)’s candidate at the 2008 presidential polls, Prof. John Evans Atta-Mills.
When Atta-Mills died in 2012, Mahama was sworn in as president. He won the December 2012 elections and served a full term as president. He lost his 2016 re-election bid as well as that of 2020.
Family Life
He is the son of Emmanuel Adama Mahama, a former MP of the West Gonja District in northern Ghana. He has been married to Lordina Mahama, who served as the First Lady of Ghana. He has five children.
Achievements
He has been the recipient of the Cuban Friendship Medal, the Africa Award for Excellence in Food Security and Poverty Reduction and the University of Aberdeen’s honorary Doctors of Law.
Trivia
He published a memoir titled “My First Coup d'État: Memories from the Lost Decades of Africa” in 2012.
