About John Dryden
John Dryden was a poet, literary critic, translator and librettist. In 1668, he received an appointment as the Poet Laureate of England. He is also remembered for his influence on the literary culture of Restoration England.
His best-known works of poetry include “Astraea Redux”, “Annus Mirabilis” and “Mac Flecknoe”. As a playwright, he wrote popular plays such as “All for Love”, “Marriage a la Mode” and “The Wild Gallant”.
Family Life
He was the first of the fourteen children of Mary Pickering and Erasmus Dryden. He was the grandson of Sir Erasmus Dryden, a House of Commons politician. He married Elizabeth Howard, the daughter of the 1st Earl of Berkshire, Thomas Howard in 1663. They had three sons together.
Death
He died on May 12, 1700 in London, England.
