About John Gavin
John Gavin decided to work as an actor after his dad convinced him to take up a test by Universal-International which was arranged by his friend, Bryan Foy. He began his acting training under the production firm and was then known as John Gilmore.
He made his film debut in 1956’s “Raw Edge”. He later gained global recognition for his roles in films like “Imitation of Life” and “Psycho”. He was cast in many films produced by American filmmaker Ross Hunter.
Other works
In 1971, he was elected as the Screen Actors Guild’s president and served in that position for two years. Ten years after his election, he was named America’s ambassador to Mexico by then President Ronald Reagan.
He left the position in 1986 and became Atlantic Richfield’s vice-president. The following year, he was appointed the head of Univisa Satellite Communications. He also worked for companies like Gamma Holdings; International Wire Group Holdings, Inc.; and TCW Strategic Income Fund.
Family
He had a Mexican root from his mum, Delia Diana Pablos. His dad, Herald Ray Golenor, was a mining engineer. Between 1957 and 1965, he was married to Cecily Evans and together they had two kids. He later married actress Constance Towers.
Education
He earned his first degree at Stanford University. Before that, he studied at St. John's Military Academy.
Interesting facts
Before becoming an actor, he served in the United States Navy and participated in the Korean War.
He worked with the Organization of American States as an advisor.
