About John Gielgud
Sir John Gielgud, also known in full as Sir Arthur John Gielgud, was a revered English actor and theatre director, who was one of the most famous 20th century British stage actors. In addition to his enormous success on stage, he also had a very successful television and film career starring in films such as 1933's The Good Companions, 1964's Becket and 1981's Arthur.
Achievements
He was knighted in 1953. Over the course of his career, he became one of the few entertainers to ever win all four major entertainment awards: the Emmy, Grammy, Tony and Oscar.
Trivia
At the age of 87, he became the oldest person to ever win an Emmy award.
In 1953, during the time when being gay was considered a criminal offence, he was arrested while trying to find a gay lover at one of London's underground public lavatories.
