About John Hadley
British mathematician John Hadley contributed significantly to the field of astronomy when he improved the reflecting telescope.
Biography
Hadley was born to George Hadley and Katherine Fitzjames in Hertfordshire, England. In 1717, he became a member of the Royal Society of London, where he rose to become the society’s vice president.
Inventions
In 1721, he built the Newtonian reflector (also known as the Newtonian telescope) and the positive remarks encouraged him to build larger models. His telescopes became a staple among astronomers. In 1730, he invented the reflecting octant, a device designed to help in navigation while at sea.
Personal Life & Legacy
Hadley was married to Elizabeth Hodges and they had a son, John. He died in 1744.
Two regions on the moon, Mons Hadley and Rima Hadley, were named after him.
