About John Handy
John Handy is a celebrated jazz musician. The American is considered as one of the most talented alto saxophonists of his generation. Handy gained his celebrity status in 1959 after he led the recording of the album entitled “In the Vernacular”.
His popularity increased in the 1980s when he started performing with the Bebop & Beyond ensemble. In addition to that, he has released quite a number of successful albums including “Where Go the Boats” and “New View” which was released via Columbia Records.

He has performed with his son John Richard Handy IV.
Education
Handy went to San Francisco State College to study music. Prior to that, he attended McClymonds High School.
Honors
The SF JAZZ awarded him the Beacon Award in 2009.
Trivia
As a lecturer, he has taught at the University of California in Berkeley, and San Francisco State University.
He also served in the Korean War as a member of the US Army.
Aside from the saxophone, he also plays the oboe, saxello, and the clarinet.
