About John Harrison
John Harrison was a famous British self-educated carpenter and horologist.
He is famously known for inventing the world’s first marine chronometer – a long-desired device that could enable sea navigators to calculate their longitude accurately. Harrison’s invention was a revolution in sea travel, as it hugely increased its safety over a long distance.
The 1700s witnessed many unfortunate sea disasters caused by the problem of poor navigation technology. The British parliament was much concerned about the issue and offered £20,000 to any person who could develop an accurate chronometer – specifically, a chronometer that could calculate sea longitude within 0.5 of a degree from West Indies to a voyage’s end.
Harrison presented his first chronometer for the award in 1730. He worked on his designs and improved accuracy and on-the-clock technology in the device anytime he built a new chronometer. As a result, many modern manufacturers use his clock model in the chronometer in their devices. In 2002, the BBC conducted a public poll that ranked Harrison 39th in the “100 Greatest Britons” list.
Harrison never received the total amount of the award money even though his chronometer met all the standards in the award contract. As a result, he received just £5,000 in 1773, about 43 years after he presented his first design.
