Personal Life
At birth, the name given to him by his parents Mary Hartford and Carl Hartford was John Cowan. John wanted to get into music since he understood it. He was a student of John Burroughs School then from there, he continued his education at Washington University in St. Louis. Even though he was a good student, he dropped out to give music a shot. While living in Missouri, his experiences there shaped his love for music and his career in the field.
Career
When he was sixteen years old, he got a job on the river and by that time, he had already learnt to play the banjo, the guitar and also become a good fiddler. In 1966, he worked on his first album titled “Looks at Life” then he released “Earthwords & Music” as his second album the following year. He went on to release a lot more tracks and albums including “All in the Name of Love” and “The Speed of the Old Long Bow”.
Death
He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma for some time but in the year 2001 when he was in his early sixties, the disease claimed his life.
