The college football trophy bearing John Heisman's name might be his most well-known legacy. One of the game's greatest pioneers, he coached collegiate gridiron football in America for almost four decades.
Background
He had two marriages. On October 3, 1936, in New York City, he succumbed to pneumonia.
From 1890 to 1891, he played center and tackle for the University of Pennsylvania, the same university he obtained a law degree from.
Career
Heisman worked as a coach at a number of teams, including the Auburn Tigers, the Clemson Tigers, and the Washington & Jefferson.
His most successful coaching tenure was with Georgia Tech, where his Golden Tornadoes set a record with 33 straight victories.
A Shakespearean actor, he left coaching to take the helm of the New York City Downtown Athletic Club. The club began presenting the best college football player with a trophy every year in 1935; the prize became known as the Heisman Trophy in 1936.
