About John Henry Newman
John Henry Newman influenced the history of religion in England in the 19th century through his writings and leadership by example. He converted to evangelicalism at 15 years old and nine years later, in 1825, he became an ordained Anglican priest, serving the Church of England. A fellow of the University of Oxford, he became one of the leaders of the popular Oxford Movement, whose members advocated for the return of Catholic beliefs to the Church of England. He left the church and his teaching job in 1845 and converted to Catholicism. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1847 and in 1879, he was created as a cardinal.
Family Life
He was the son of Jemima Fourdrinier and John Newman, a banker. He had two younger brothers and three younger sisters. He was the older brother of English classical scholar and moral philosopher Francis William Newman.
Death
He died on August 11, 1890 from pneumonia.
