Background
The English painter was born on October 12, 1934, to a working-class family in Sheffield and at the age of eleven was in the junior art department of Sheffield College of Art. He then moved to the Royal Academy Schools, London in 1956.
Career
This art genius held his first exhibition in 1964 at the Marlborough New London Gallery. Influenced by his friend Brian Fielding, he started championing abstraction in modern art. His paintings are known for their simple shapes and flat surfaces. In the 1970s, he showcased his paintings at the Robert Elkon Gallery and the André Emmerich Gallery in New York City. Despite criticism from some art scholars, Hoyland won the John Moores Painting Prize in 1982 and the Royal Academy's Wollaston Award in 1998. He became a professor at the Royal Academy Schools in 1999.
Death
This abstract painter died from complications from heart surgery in 2008.
