John Jacob Astor IV was an American businessman, writer and inventor remembered for being a member of the highly influential and wealthy Astor family. During his lifetime, he was regarded as one of the wealthiest people in the world. He died tragically aboard the RMS Titanic when it sank in 1912. He was 47 years old.
Family Life
He was the youngest of the five children of Caroline Webster "Lina" Schermerhorn and William Backhouse Astor Jr. In 1891, he and socialite Ava Lowle Willing tied the knot. The marriage produced two children William and Ava. His second and final marriage was to socialite Madeleine Talmage Force, with whom he had a son named John.
Trivia
In addition to being one of the 1,514 people on board the Titanic that perished when it sank, he was also the richest passenger aboard the ship.
At the time of his death, he had an estimated net worth of about $87 million, which in 2015 was equivalent to $2.13 billion.
