About John Kirwan
John Kirwan is a popular Australian retired rugby player and coach. He started his professional career in 1983 as a player for Marist Brothers Old Boys RFC and went on to become one of the greatest Australian wingers of all-time. Before announcing his retirement, he played for the Auckland Warriors.
International career
Kirwan played for the New Zealand national team on many occasions. He helped his country to win the maiden edition of the Rugby World Cup which was held in 1987. Before ending his playing career, he held the record for the highest tries scored by a rugby player.
Coaching career
After retiring, he began working as a coach. His first role was as the head coach of Japanese side NEC Green Rockets. He was later hired by the Auckland Blues in 2001 as a deputy coach.
The following year, the Federazione Italiana Rugby named him as the head coach of ‘gli Azzurri’. He became the coach of the Japanese national team in 2007 and led them to the Rugby World Cup which was held later that year.
Children
His children with Fiorella are called Niko, Francesca, and Luca. All his three children are into sports.
Honors
He became a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1989. In 2007, he was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit. His name was added to the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. Two years later, he was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame.
Trivia
At a stage in his life, he battled with severe depression.
