About John Lloyd Stephens
American diplomat John Lloyd Stephens and his companion Frederick Catherwood were known for their travels across Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Together with Catherwood, Stephens is also known for the best-seller “Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatán,” a book which details their exploits abroad as explorers and diplomats.

Notable Facts
He met his architect friend, Frederick Catherwood, in London, and they set out to take a trip to Central America to see ruins of ancient civilizations.
Martin Van Buren, the then-president of the U.S, appointed Stephens as ambassador to Central America. With Frederick, he got to Belize in October 1839 and set about exploring the region. Some of their important discoveries include a carved stone, terraces and stairways. The duo were credited with the introduction of detailed ancient Maya history to the West.

Stephen and Catherwood published books that depicted a number of Maya sites with detailed information.
