About John M. Lounge
American engineer John Michael "Mike" Lounge was a Vietnam War veteran who later touched the stars after becoming a mission specialist for the U.S. space agency NASA.
Early Life
The engineer graduated from Burlington High School in 1964 and later went on to acquire a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1969. His love for engineering urged him to attain a master's degree in Astro geophysics from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1970.
Military Career
The engineer joined the United States Navy and later graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, where he trained as a radar intercept officer in the F-4J Phantom II. Lounge signed up for a nine-month Southeast Asia cruise aboard USS Enterprise, participating in more than 95 combat missions in the Vietnam War. He later resigned from active duty in 1978.
NASA Career
The engineer was called to work for NASA towards the end of 1978. He worked as the lead engineer for Space Shuttle-launched satellites and also served as a member of the launch support team for NASA'S first orbital spaceflight in 1981. Lounge went on spaceflight missions, including that of STS-51-I Space Shuttle Discovery, which was NASA'S 20th mission shuttle program.
Achievements
Lounge won more than 5 Navy Air Medals and was awarded numerous Navy Commendation Medals as well as NASA Space Flight Medals.
