About John Marsden
Australian author John Marsden, a lifelong educator with two schools to his credit, has penned more than 40 books over the course of a more than 30-year career, including picture books for kids and nonfiction for adults.
Early Life
He went to The King's School in Parramatta. He enrolled in Sydney University's Arts/Law program, but quit shortly after.
Career
All Saints' College was where he started teaching after working several menial jobs throughout the years. He decided to write for teens while employed as an English teacher at Geelong Grammar School's Timbertop campus.
His debut book "So Much To Tell You," which he finished in three weeks, was published in 1987 and quickly became a bestseller. He continued to write novels with some of them being "Everything I Know About Writing," "The Rabbits," and the wildly popular Tomorrow Series and Ellie Chronicles.
He purchased a sizable property where he spent eight years running writing camps. With the success of these camps, he launched Candlebark School.
An opera based on "The Rabbits" was commissioned by Opera Australia in 2014. The opera premiered the following year and received numerous awards.
Honors
He received the Dromkeen Medal in 2018. The coveted award has been won by the likes of Erica Wagner, Patricia Mullins and Shaun Tan.
