About John Pemberton
During his time with the Confederate States Army, John Pemberton developed a bad wound while serving at the Battle of Columbus. In order to ease the pain, he was given some painkillers which contained morphine. He got addicted to it later in his life.
Finding a way to cure his addiction, he experimented with many non-morphine painkillers before coming up with a coca wine which he labelled ‘Pemberton's French Wine Coca’.
In 1886, he created a non-alcoholic version of his wine which would later be called "Coca-Cola". The name was coined by renowned Frank Mason Robinson. Pemberton carried a sample of the syrup he had produced to Jacobs' Pharmacy which was situated in Atlanta for testing and was convinced it was good for consumption.
Family
He was born to Martha L. Gant and James C. Pemberton. The American pharmacist was married to Ann Eliza Clifford Lewis, and together they had a son named Charles Ney Pemberton.
Education
At the age of 19 years, he graduated from the Reform Medical College of Georgia with a degree in medicine.
Death
He died at age 57, after battling with stomach cancer.
Fun Facts
He sold the rights of his portion to American businessman Asa Griggs Candler for a fee believed to be around US$1,750.
He rose to the Lieutenant Colonel rank before leaving the army in 1865.
Though he was American, he had an English lineage.
