About John Phillips
This American singer and guitarist is best known as the frontman for the American rock vocal group the Mamas and the Papas.
Early Years
Originally from Paris Island South Carolina, he enrolled at Linton Hall Military School before proceeding to George Washington High School. Later, he studied at Hampden-Sydney College after a few months in the Navy.
The Mamas & the Papas & Other Notable Highlights
After leaving his first band, Journeymen, with whom he released three albums, he started the Mamas and the Papas with two friends. The group signed with Dunhill Records and released a number of successful singles, including “Monday, Monday,” “I Saw Her Again” and “Creeque Alley,” which took the 5th spot on the U.S. Billboard pop singles chart and 1st on Canadian charts.
Solo Career
During his solo career in the late 1960s, he released his debut album “John, the Wolf King of L.A.” He also co-wrote songs for the 1975 musical “Man on the Moon.” His albums “Pay Pack & Follow,” “Phillips 66” and “Pussycat" were released posthumously.
Personal Life
He died from health complications which developed from the long use of heroin and cocaine.
Recognition
His band the Mamas and the Papas were inducted into the Rock ‘n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
