About John Searle
American philosopher John Searle is widely celebrated for his contribution to the study of the philosophy of mind, and language. He established himself with his book titled “Speech Acts” which was published in 1969.
He has gone on to share his ideas in his later books with some titled “Intentionality: An Essay in the Philosophy of Mind” and “Mind, Language and Society: Philosophy in the Real World”.
As one of the most respected American philosophers of his era, Searle has worked with some renowned institutions such as the University of California, Berkeley.
Controversies
Searle was accused of sexually assaulting one of his research associates in 2017. Later that year, a lawsuit was filed against him alongside the Regents of the University of California. In 2019, the University of California recommended for his emeritus title to be revoked.
Family
He’s the son of G. W. Searle and his physician wife Hester Beck Searle. He has been married to a lady named Dagmar Searle.
Education
He studied at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and later attended the University of Oxford.
Awards
The renowned philosopher has been decorated with many laurels including the Mind & Brain Prize, the Jean Nicod Prize, and the National Humanities Medal. In 2010, he became a member of the American Philosophical Society.
Trivia
In 1965, he became the only tenured professor at the University of California, Berkeley to join the Free Speech Movement.
