Born in 1819 in New York to John Vanderbilt and Sarah Lott, John Vanderbilt was appointed Judge of Kings County, Brooklyn from 1844 to 1847. He was elected to the New York State Senate as a Democrat in 1852. Vanderbilt ran for Lieutenant Governor of New York in 1856 at the New York state election but was defeated by Henry R. Selden.
Personal Life
He tied the knot with Gertrude Lott Lefferts in 1846.
