Early Life
John Galbreath was born on a farm in Derby, Ohio. He worked as a farmhand to pay his school fees while at Ohio University. He was so poor that he would sometimes work in exchange for food.
Career
By 1922, Galbreath owned his company where he helped companies manage their real estate. Hit hard by the Great Depression, however, his company survived and thrived because he helped dispose of a lot of foreclosed properties.
He became the majority owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1950; and under his leadership, the team won three World Series Championships.
Galbreath also operated Darby Dan Farms, where he bred and trained thoroughbred horses, training both a Kentucky Derby winner and an Epsom Derby winner.
A businessman extraordinary, Galbreath was awarded the American Academy of Achievement Award in 1961 and the Columbus Award in 1964.
