About John Wilde
John Wilde is regarded as one of America’s most influential painters. Many of his unusual yet brilliant and powerful paintings have garnered him several awards.
Life
Wilde was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he studied art. He later moved to New York to start his career as an artist, but he returned home after being unsuccessful. He was influenced by artists such as Marshall Glasier and James C. Watrous. Wilde learned the silver point technique from Watrous, which he eventually mastered and became best known for.
After serving in the US Army during the Second World War, Wilde returned to his alma mater for his master’s degree in art history. In 1948, he started teaching drawing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and retired as the Alfred Sussler Distinguished Professor of Art in 1982.
Family Life
Wilde had two children with his wife, Helen. After losing Helen in 1966, he married Shirley Grilley.
