Early Life & Education
Born in South Boston, Massachusetts, he attended night law school and passed the Massachusetts Bar exam when he was 21.
Political Career
He became a member of the Democratic Party; and by age 25, he was elected to his first public office. He spent 2 years in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and 3 years in the State Legislature. He was a member of the U.S. Congress for over four decades.
In 1962, he filled Sam Rayburn’s shoes as Speaker of the House. Following the assassination of President J.F. Kennedy and the swearing-in of Hubert Humphrey as vice president, he was given secret service protection.
Legacy
A school in Dorchester, the John W. McCormick Middle School, was named after him.
