About John Wooden
John Wooden, also known by the nickname the "Wizard of Westwood", was a renowned American basketball player and coach remembered for his massively successful playing and coaching careers. He played for the Purdue Boilermakers men's basketball team from 1929 to 1932 and won the College Basketball Player of the Year award in 1932. As a coach, he led UCLA to approximately ten NCAA national championships.
He married his high school sweetheart Nellie Riley in 1932. The couple had two children, and remained married until Nellie's death in 1985.
He was a staunch Christian, who read the Bible every day.
In 2003, U.S. President George W. Bush bestowed upon him the country's highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
He was the first person to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach.
